Friday, September 06, 2002 SITE NOTES
I've spent the past few days formatting photos for the WSOP exhibit, but I don't have anything to show for it yet. After I actually get the photos up, I have to go through the photo albums and check Tex Whitson and George Fisher's notes, which tell me who is who. I then write the quotes, check everything, and post it. I think there are over 200 images, so this may take time. The next step towards finishing the exhibit is to finally gather the info for the annual summaries. This is actually kind of difficult, and may take time. Other site news....I've added an internet gaming resources page that has some good sources of information. This, too, is harder to find than one might think. If you just do a search for "internet gaming statistics" on Google, you get 2,000 online casino sites. But with a little searching, I found some sites, particuarly River City and GamingLicenses, that had solid data. Hopefully, my HMD 376 class will produce some papers that I can post as subject guides, or at least pieces in the Reading Room. In news outside of my office.... ATLANTIC CITY, NJ: PLAYGROUND NO MORE?, CASINO INTERPRETERS, WILMOTT'S PROMOTION, MORE City tourism officials are studying whether to change the city's logo and tagline. I say, just hire away some people from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, give them a sufficient budget, and you'll be a genius. Story here from the AC Press. 65% of AC casino workers don't speak English as a first language, so casino interpreters are important. Story here from the AC Press. Harrah's Eastern Division President Timothy Wilmott has been promoted to COO. COO Gary Loveman is becoming CEO, and CEO Phil Satre is remaining as Chairman of the Board. Story here from the AC Press. Caesars and the Taj have paid for their violations. This is an interesting article because it shows the kinds of things that are illegal, and the kinds of things that the CCC targets. Story here from the AC Press. LAS VEGAS, NV: 9/11 PLANS; NO PIZZA AT THE SAHARA Strip casinos and other Las Vegas businesses are making plans to mark the first anniversary of last year's terror attacks. Story here from the LV Sun. The Sahara casino hotel is going to court to block pizza places from littering their halls with fliers. Story here from the LV Sun. LINCOLN, NE: SLOT PROPONENTS IN THE MONEY Those favoring legal slots have raised $404,000. Story here from the LV Sun. That's all for today. Have a great weekend.
Wednesday, September 04, 2002 SITE NOTES
I haven't done much to update the site this week, as I've been super busy with a few other projects. Look for updates to the World Series of Poker exhibit soon. The Stern Atlantic City exhibit, about which I was so optimistic a few months ago, is on hold indefinitely, as I have several other projects to complete before then. My class, HMD 376B, is going incredibly well. If you are a UNLV student, look out for HMD 410, Hospitality Security Operations, which I'll be teaching in the spring. If you're in the Las Vegas area, I'm going be on Fox 5 morning news next Tuesday, 9/10, to talk about the NY NY tribute project. I should be on after 8 AM. It could always change, but if you're not doing anything else, feel free to tune in. AUGUSTA, ME: CASINO STUDY NO CIRCUS The chairman of Maine's casino exploratory group said that the group would not be a circus. I guess Mandalay better forget applying for a license. That's funny because they used to be Circus Circus, Inc. Story here from Boston.com. ATLANTIC CITY, NJ: BEST MONTH EVER For casinos, that is. Revenue is booming. Story here from the AC Press. FOXWOODS, CT: 2 GUILTY OF LOAN SHARKING What, there's a connection between gambling and loan sharking? Story here from the LV Sun. RENO, NV: GOLD DUST LODGE DOING WELL The casino in downtown Reno has boosted revenues and cashflow. We will never forget the name of....Goldust. Story here from the Reno G-J. That's all the news for today. Working in a wrestling reference always makes it worthwhile. Look for another update Friday.

What is Casino[ptz]? In a sentence: "A weblog featuring news, notes, and opinions from the world of casinos and gambling." Casino is self-explanatory; ptz refers to a surveillance camera that can pan, tilt, and zoom, thus offering the operator a better perspective and more detailed shot. Casino [ptz] was maintained by Dave Schwartz, coordinator of the Gaming Studies Research Center at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. As of now, Casino [ptz] is not being updated. Instead, you can find Dave's wit and wisdom on his own website, www.dieiscast.com. \ Go there now, for casino carpets and more. The opinions expressed are those of Dr. Schwartz and not those of UNLV or any of its students, staff, or faculty. If you have any questions, please direct them to Dave at dgs@unlv.nevada.edu. ---------------------------------

Dave Schwartz is the coordinator of the Gaming Studies Research Center at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, which means that he spends most of his time at work doing three things: 1) Extending and improving the collection of books, journals, and primary materials about gambling known as the Gaming Collection. 2) Working on digital initiatives, such as this weblog and the GSRC site, that facilitate the understanding of gaming research and gaming issues. 3) Answering questions about gambling from media and researchers, or directing them to the answers.
Before coming to UNLV, Schwartz worked in the Atlantic City casino industry as a surveillance officer. He is also the youngest person known to have received a Ph.D. in History from UCLA. Schwartz is the author of Suburban Xanadu: The Casino Resort on the Las Vegas Strip and Beyond, which is an intelligent, accurate account of the creation and legacy of the Las Vegas Strip. Click on the link for more information about this best-selling book, or just buy it from amazon.com. -------------------------- In his own words: "To answer the biggest question I get, no, I don't gamble. I know the odds and, having spent more hours than I care to remember watching people gambling, it doesn't excite me at all. So why do I study gambling? Because the industry and the interactions fascinate me. "Las Vegas is an interesting place to live, and my job gives me a good window on the city. In a typical day, I might go from talking about gambling books with a system player to answering a question from a reporter from a major newspaper to meeting with casino executives. So I think I can bring a unique perspective on the industry and the people who make it work." Dave is currrently developing a "Mystery Mammals" cartoon idea. Hey, if "Father of the Pride" works, maybe animal cartoons will become the next big thing. ------------------------------ Just because Dave just likes these images, and hopes you do as well.
It's always important to remember your roots. Dave has chosen this image to constantly remind him just where he came from. It is a heraldic crest gone wrong.
Oh yeah, Dave also likes to see his name in lights. This is a genuine, non-photoshopped image...or is it?
Casino carpet is almost (but not quite) abstract art. This is from a real casino floor in a real Las Vegas Strip casino. Guess where and win a prize! Here are some closing thoughts from Orff's Carmina Burana, "Fortuna, Imperatrix Mundi" (Fortune, Empress of the World): O Fortune, Somehow I don't think you'll find that in any casino advertisements. But Carmina Burana would be a great casino show, particularly sectons 2 and 3, which deal explicitly with gambling, drinking, debauchery, and sex. The opera is almost an adaptation of the 13th century version of "what happens in Vegas (or, in this case, Beuren), stays in Vegas. Certainly it has all the elements of a great revue extravaganza. |
