May22nd One hundred and four poker players from around the world competed for a pot of $957,000 and the title of World Poker Champion. This event saw the largest pot and participants to date. At the end of the first day only sixty-nine players remained in the game.
At the end of day two, twenty-six players remained. Last year's winner Stu Ungar checked out on this day and dashing any hopes of having a three time championship run.
At the end of day three only nine players remained, including Doyle Brunson and "Sailor" Roberts.
Jack Straus two 10's beat Dewey Tomko two 4's to win the Championship. |
