1941: Sam Boyd arrives in Las Vegas, starts working as a dealer; he later owns shares in the Sahara, Mint, and Union Plaza casinos 1962: Boyd and his son Bill, a practicing attorney, buy the Eldorado Casino in Henderson, NV 1975: Sam and Bill Boyd open the California Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas under the aegis of the Boyd Group, composed of 75 investors 1979: Boyd opens Sam's Town, a locals-oriented property on Boulder Highway at Nellis, inaugurating the development of the "Boulder Strip" 1983: Boyd begins operating the Stardust, at the behest of Nevada regulators 1985: Boyd officially acquires the Stardust 1985: Boyd acquires the Fremont in downtown Las Vegas 1988: Boyd Gaming incorporated in Nevada 1991: Management agreement for Goldriver Hotel and Gambling Hall in Laughlin is terminated 1991: High-rise tower expansion opens at the Stardust 1993: Boyd Gaming, Inc. issues public stock, and is traded on the NYSE 1993: Boyd Gaming acquires the Eldorado and Jokers Wild, which had been owned by members of the Boyd family; the Jokers Wild had recently opened on Boulder Highway in Henderson 1993: Sam Boyd dies 1993: Boyd Gaming acquires Main Street Station in downtown Las Vegas, begins renovating it 1994: Casino expansion at Jokers Wild, hotel expansion at California, $105 million casino and hotel expansion at Sam's Town Las Vegas 1994: On May 25, Sam's Town Tunica opens 1994: Boyd Gaming begins operating the Silver Star Hotel and Casino, owned by the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians 1994: Treasure Chest Casino, a riverboat, opens in Kenner, Louisiana; Boyd owns 15% of the casino, and manages it 1995: Sam's Town Kansas City opens 1995: The Fremont Street Experience, which Boyd is instrumental in developing, opens in downtown Las Vegas in December 1996: Company announces plans for Sam's Town Reno and a joint project with Mirage Resorts in Atlantic City; the latter ultimately becomes the Borgata, while Sam's Town Reno is never built 1996: Main Street Station re-opens as a full-service hotel casino 1996: Boyd acquires the Par-A-Dice, a riverboat casino on the Illinois River in East Peoria, Illinois 1997: Boyd acquires the remaining 85% of the Treasure Chest 1998: Sam's Town Kansas City closes 1999: Renovation and expansion projects at Sam's Town Las Vegas; 550 motor inn rooms demolished during Stardust remodeling 1998: Boyd acquires the Blue Chip, a riverboat casino in Michigan City, Indiana 2000: Boyd agrees to terminate its management agreement with the Mississippi Band of Choctaw's Silver Star 2000: A 188-room hotel and parking faciltiy opens at the Blue Chip casino 2000: Renovation project completed at Sam's Town Las Vegas; 18-screen movie theater, childcare facility, parking garage, and buffet added 2000: Groundbreaking on the Borgata 2000: $21 million renovation of Sam's Town Tunica completed 2001: Acquired Delta Downs Racetrack in Vinton, Louisiana, and an off-track betting facility in Mound, Louisiana 2002: Slot operations at Delta Downs begin, with 1500 machines and a $33 million renovation 2002: Boyd purchases the former Isle of Capri property in Tunica, closes its casino, and utilizes its 225 hotel rooms 2003: Borgata opens in Atlantic City on July 3; the $1.1 billion property redefines the gaming industry there 2004: Boyd acquires Harrah's Shreveport and operates it as Sam's Town Shreveport 2004: Boyd Gaming acquires Coast Casinos, Inc, which owns the Barbary Coast, Gold Coast, Sun Coast, and Orleans hotel-casinos in Atlantic City; Coast becomes a fully-owned subsidiary of Boyd 2004: Hotel expansion opens at the Orleans, giving it over 1800 rooms 2005: South Coast opens in December on Las Vegas Boulevard, about five miles south of Mandalay Bay 2006: Boyd announces plans to close the Stardust in 2007 and redevelop the 63-acre site as Echelon Place, a $4.0 billion destination resort 2006: Boyd sells the South Coast back to Michael Gaughan |
