UNLV Casino/Hotel Executive Survey Series

Take the 2009 Las Vegas Casino/Hotel Recession Impact Survey

To help researchers and members of the industry get a better idea of what the current thinking in the gaming industry is, the Center for Gaming Research has launched a survey series that targets Las Vegas-area casino/hotel executives. Any director-and-above employee of a Las Vegas-area gaming establishment with an unrestricted license, or the parent company of one, is eligible to take the survey.

Participation in the survey is voluntary and completely anonymous. No information about survey-takers is collected or retained.

By gathering information on how those who manage the casinos of Las Vegas, we hope to get a better understanding of how the industry works, and how it can work better. With the current economic climate challenging even the most resourceful operators and raising legitimate public policy questions about the industry's future, it is hoped that these surveys can help decision-makers make better-informed choices.

Contact people at each unrestricted licensee in the Las Vegas area have been notified of the survey and encouraged to distribute the link among their executive team. It is hoped that a representative sample of executives from various properties and at various levels will respond to the survey.

The first survey, currently being conducted, is a study of how executives perceive and are responding to the current decline in gaming revenues and visitation.

When the survey is finished, the data and a brief analysis will be made available to the public via this page.

2009 Las Vegas Casino/Hotel Recession Impact Study

In 1980, accounting firm Laventhal and Horwath conducted a "Recession Impact Study" that polled executives at Las Vegas casinos about the nature of the ongoing economic decline. In 2009, the Center for Gaming Research is revisiting this study since, unfortunately, the city's casinos are in much the same position.

Here are some frequently-asked questions and answers about the UNLV Casino/Hotel Executive Survey Series

How do I get a password?

To register, email Dr. Schwartz at dgs@unlv.nevada.edu with your name, title, and place of employment. After veryifying your employment status, he will give you a password.

Why survey casino/hotel executives?

Because they are the ones who make decisions, small and large, that steer the direction of the gaming industry and implement the policies that drive the casino industry. Whether it is setting room rates, configuring slot floors, approving promotions, or planning expansions, executives are responsible for much of what goes on in casino hotels.

Why is the survey confined to Las Vegas?

Because that's where UNLV is located, and because the city has a high density of casino hotels. If the Las Vegas survey is successful, and an appropriate distribution system is created to deliver a broader reach, the survey will be expanded to include other geographic regions.

How is the survey conducted?

Representatives of each of the 70+ Las Vegas area casinos were contacted and given the survey URL. They were instructed to share the URL with 5-10 director-and-above executvies at their property.

What will future surveys address?

Future surveys will tackle issues like slot mix, food and beverage offerings, entertainment policies, and casino marketing.
